Flowers At No 3 - Flower Care
To ensure you enjoy your flowers to the full, we have prepared this care guidance article of useful tips and note worthy information.
How to Care for Your Cut Flowers & Hand-Tied Bouquets
1. Prepare a Clean Vase: Use a thoroughly clean vase filled with room-temperature water. Mix in our flower food, following the instructions on the sachet. This helps nourish your flowers and keeps bacteria away.
2. Unwrap and Arrange: Remove the gift packaging to let the flowers breathe. If your bouquet is hand-tied and you want to keep it arranged as designed, don't cut the binding cord around the stems.
3. Trim the Stems: Cut at least 2cm (1 inch) off the bottom of each stem at a slant using a sharp knife or scissors. Make sure no leaves are below the waterline, as they can cause bacteria to grow. Clean two thirds of the stem. Just like your skin, the stem of the flower is breathing so you need to make sure that it is not just drinking from the bottom. Don’t leave your flowers out of the water for more than 2 minutes after you cut them - The bottom will dry in seconds and form an air bubble.
4. Place and Position: Place the flowers in your clean vase, then place it in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, radiators, open fires, and air conditioning. Tip: Avoid placing it near fruit, which releases ethylene gas that can shorten flower life.
5. Maintain Your Flowers: Remove any wilted flowers or fallen leaves from the water. Top up with clean water daily if needed. For best results, keep cleaning your vase, change the water, add flower food, and re-trim the stems every 3 days.

Important Notes and General Top Tips
· Flowers, foliage, and berries are for decoration only. Keep them away from children and pets.
· To avoid water marks to surfaces, use a protective mat under the vase.
· Remove pollen from flowers in bloom to prevent staining.
· Berries and lilies pollen will stain.
· You can put bleach in water for flowers that don’t bloom such as wax flower, calla lily and tulips. Bleach slows down the growing progress. Put flower food with flowering flowers.
· Vase choices - ideally use plastic, glass or ceramic. Put as much water possible in a plastic or glass vase. If you put it in metal containers, they will get infected by the oxidants.
· When you are conditioning your flowers - clean two thirds of the stem. Just like your skin, the stem of the flower is breathing so you need to make sure that it is not just drinking from the bottom.
· Ideal tool to cut your flowers - using a sharp, clean knife, scissors or secateurs cut at least 2cm off each stem at a 45° angle. Flowers with woody stems should be cut at an angle and split. Do not crush stems as this destroys their molecular structure and prevents water from being absorbed.
· Why remove any foliage which may be in the water - if left, it will decompose and the water will begin to smell and discolour, spoiling your flowers.
· If you do not have flower food the best way to extend the live of cut flowers is to add some sugar into the water.
· Dont consume the flower food, and should be kept out of reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions About Maintaining Fresh Cut Flowers
How long should you expect your fresh flower bouquet to last? 🌸
It can vary with the seasons:
🌼 Spring/Summer
Warmer temperatures mean flowers typically last around 3–4 days
❄️ Autumn/Winter
Cooler conditions help blooms last longer — usually around 5–6 days for a hand-tied bouquet

Are there any flowers that require a little extra care? 🌿
Absolutely! Some blooms need slightly different treatment to keep them looking their best:
🌳 Woody stems (like certain shrubs and foliage)
• Cut with a sharp knife rather than scissors
• Remove around 80% of the leaves
• Place in lukewarm water with flower food
🌷 Narcissus, hyacinths & tulips
• Avoid cutting the stems as standard
• If they become weak, you can trim them — then wrap in paper and stand in water for around 1 hour to help them rehydrate and stay upright
A little extra care goes a long way in keeping your flowers fresh and beautiful 🤍
